Summary: Golflogix V.S. Sureshot
Comment: Recentely purchased this unit foir my wife and I am impressed. As simple to use as is possible. Turn it on and turn it off. The GPS unit does the rest. Hazards, front, back and center of the green are calculated automatically. Simple to load and the courses (with hazards) are there unlike my Sureshot model. I own several other Garmin products and thought if they do as good a job on the golf GPS as they do on the marine and road units it would be good. I am not dissappointed.

Summary: Three and a half, actually
Comment: I've had this about two weeks. A few warnings: It is not easy to figure out exactly how the batteries load (quarter turn of the hoop on the battery cover) or exactly how the USB cable connects. The quick start guide is of almost no help with these items. I would suggest you download the PDF before trying to use this thing. Also, if you have Windows Vista, let Vista find and install the serial port driver. Make sure you have the driver in place, the batteries in the unit, and the USB/serial cable ready to go before you try to register your unit.

As for the unit, it gets lost sometimes. Several times, I've looked at the thing and it's giving me impossible yardages or telling me the hole I'm on is out of range. Generally it comes back, but at least one shot will be from an unknown (according to the Golflogix unit's impossible yardage report) distance. So, at that point, you're back to using course markers and pacing. Or fiddling with the unit, while your playing partners sigh.

Concerning updates. A couple of days after I received the unit, I requested a course. A week later, I have yet to see the course on the "find" list.

The good parts? The unit itself is small (about the size of an old "candy bar" cell phone) and very durable. It is an enormous help inside a hundred yards or when the pin is in the back of the green. It's also a great help from the rough, especially when you're really off-line. Knowing the yardage to front/middle/back is a true boon from a trouble lie.

The worst part? When it gets lost, it tells you to "scroll up," but when you do, it often "scrolls" to another stored golf course. It just takes too much fiddling with the thing at times to know that you're on the right hole on the right course. It's also pretty much useless for chipping or putting distance as it shows nothing but "<30," inside 30 yards.

So, it's worth the money, but it ain't exactly perfect.

Summary: Handy, dandy but some quirks...
Comment: Using this product once I got it set up has been a joy. However I had to go through a lot of frustration in getting there. The first product I received was faulty. It kept turning off after a few seconds. HOWEVER, one call to GolfLogix's customer service was all it took and another brand new unit was shipped out to me without delay, which I received in only 2 days, and that one seems to work fine after testing it out on the course. All my local courses that I play are mapped on it, and it seems so far to give accurate distance readings. So I was impressed by how the company stood by their product and didn't hesitate to find a solution to my initial problem.

That said, there are two things I wish for:

1) a more readable display... it does NOT look that clear in actual use that you see in the picture. It can be difficult to get proper contrast enough to easily read the smaller print readings. In sunlight it's worse. In these days of sophisticated cell phone displays, iphones, etc., the display on this unit is rather archaic.

2) in the screens which show distance to hazards, it doesn't include the number hole you are playing and the overall yardage, which would be nice just to confirm where you are in your round. That would be nice as many times I don't have a clue as to what hole I"m on and I am wondering... is this right?

Both these things aside, I think this is a good product that could be made better by addressing these issues in future updates. It certainly feels durable and tough and is quick and easy to set up and begin using.

Summary: Not great, just OK
Comment: I have used the device during 4 rounds. Two rounds were walking and two were in a cart using the GPS in the cart to compare. Most holes comparing to the course GPS were within 5 yards, but there were a few holes where the difference was 15 -20 yards difference. In these cases I found yardage markers in the fairway and found the Garmin to be incorrect. There is a process to record and report to Garmin to make corrections, but it seems ridiculous to me. I would prefer to have a product that I paid $180 for and $30 for a membership to be tested and proven. As long as you are on the fairway and yardage markers are available to validate what it is reporting you are OK. Be aware when off the fairway, it is a crap-shoot.

Summary: Golflogix
Comment: I thought you could download more than 10 courses at a time. Some of the courses that I play are not listed and I have asked for them to be mapped and downloaded to my list. The course that I play most is not mapped correctly. I am a little disappointed.
