Summary: Garmin eTrex HCx Review
Comment: Awesome product.
Great battery live/energy saving.
A bit hard to control, but you'd get used to it after playing with it for a couple days.
Difficult to use in a car. Having RAM MOUNT holding it in a car is a good idea.

Summary: Excellent GPS!
Comment: I owned an entry level GPS from Garmin for the past 8 years (the basic yellow model). The yellow model served my needs during hunting season, but I had problems with reception in the woods and struggled to lock on to satelites in a timely fashion. Recently, I purchased the new Vista Hcx model and have been extremely satisfied with this model. This new model allows me to lock on to satelites in a matter of seconds and I am able to maintain a signal in the thickest tree cover. Heck, I even get great reception inside my house. Other benefits of this model include the ability to use micro-SD card for memory expansion (I have all the US/Canada maps loaded on a 2 gig card), digital compass works great even when standing still and the ability to upload 24 custom waypoint markers (I have uploaded 24 hunting icons such as tree stands, track, blinds, etc..). The price at Amazon can not be beat, Bass Pro Shops were easily $100 more. If you are in the market for a great compact handheld GPS unit, this model is for you.

Summary: Garmin Vista HCx Excellent product!
Comment: This is my first hand-held GPS and I am very impressed. When you travel as much as I do the "Exits" feature and available overnight accommodations nearby really comes in handy. I bought it for Geocaching but have not used it for that yet. The easy-to-read screen with adjustable backlighting was the feature that sold me. The screen resolution is very good.

Summary: Good
Comment: I tend to get lost in the 3500 acres of woods I hunt in now as I have only been hunting there for two years and I have yet to learn all the landmarks. Not an issue for stand hunting, but when I just want to mess around, I don't wanna loose my way.

This unit has a great signal...much better than my old legend, sometimes a little too good it seems. Works very well in the woods though in heavy tree cover, and thats what I wanted it for, also the tracks function is great and has let me create some of my own maps of my hunting area. The electronic compass works well also and fills the gap when you stop moving...which is what its intended for I think. I no longer fear that I will get lost as this unit is rock solid, but I do still take a good old magnetic compass just in case this unit dies an untimely death.

I am now learning my hunting area quickly without fear of getting lost, even with heavy tree cover and for that in itself this is worth every penny and gets my 5 stars.

I feel this should be mentioned...I am playing with opensource mapping software now and again, and while it takes a little more work due to the now proprietary usb output of this gps (my legend output a standard NMEA serial protocol) with the help of gpsgate from franson this new gps is able to do what I want in that respect also.

Summary: Excellent!
Comment: I bought the same GPS a few years ago and it was stolen this February at the Aconcagua National Park. (advise - be careful when you leave it unattended). I am a mountain guide so for me a GPS is not just another gadget. I use for my work.
I bought exactly the same model again since I was so happy with the old one. It was nice to see that the improvements, batteries last much longer and the reception seems stronger to me on the HCx. I do like the color display and I think it is definitely worth the extra money.
