Summary: great for hikes Comment: I held off on a GPS purchase for a while because I heard a lot of "grumblings" of how bad reception was, etc...so I'm very pleased with this unit's ability to give basic, important information while I'm hiking. I live in the foothills of CO., so I've used it outside under much tree/hill cover with no issues whatsoever (it struggles to get signals inside, sometimes) - generally about 8 satellites. I would guess that many of the higher end models have the same antenna/signal capabilities, so check carefully for what you need. This model's screen's easy to read, the interface is fine (I happen to be left handed, so my thumb doesn't have to cross over the screen to hit the toggle button). There's more I have to learn about this GPS, and I haven't used the software at all. The base map doesn't do anything for you off major highways, but for me, a guy with 7.5 minute paper topo maps, it's great for plotting points, getting a bearing. The price makes it hard to balk at if you want a new toy...make sure you have rechargable batteries.

Summary: Great value for a great little toy Comment: I'm new to GPS so I looked for a more basic unit to start with. I got my Venture HC and after realizing the user manual was almost worthless, I just started playing with it and learned most of its capabilities. A lot very neat stuff. I got good reception most everywhere except concrete parking garages. I even tracked along on a recent airline flight. I will have to get the topo package as the supplied map is functional but basic. Overall I love it.

Summary: Great BASIC Handheld GPS Comment: I really enjoy using this very small screen color Garmin eTrex HC GPS unit. I use it with coordinates to find old gold and silver mines (please always respect private property!!) and for geocaching. I find this specific Garmin unit to be much more intuitive to use and save or update my data than similar Magellan units I have used in the past.
Note: Depending on your specific use, please ensure you are using the correct map Datum!
Pros: Very fast satellite acquisition (after initial startup)
As accurate as any other handheld GPS
Great usage time between AA battery changes
Very easy to use - even for newbie's
Seems rugged enough
Good "worst case scenario" backup for your vehicle GPS (provided you have a navigator on-board and can accept plain vanilla guidance).
Cons: Will not charge up your cell phone. (Yeah, I know....just kidding!)
Some may need to carry a small magnifier to read the various screens
Other cons: Please add you own.

Summary: eTrex Venture is a good buy. Comment: This is a good budget GPS for the hiker and bicyclist. I use it as a speedometer on my mountain bike, and take it on walks and jogs - it's great for measuring mileage. Because it syncs with atomic clock info from the gps satellites, it will be your most accurate clock too. I set my watches to it. If you need a barometric sensor and magnetic compass, step up to the Vista HCX.
